Frank Lloyd Wright Stained Glass

Frank Lloyd Wright stained glass

There is a varied and fascinating multitude of styles in the art of stained glass, irrespective of its destination or functionality and the light and color effects were always attractive for any kind of person.
Until the 19th century, stained glass had the role to illustrate Biblical images in the churches, in a figurative way, which could be understood by everybody. At the beginning of the 20th century though, the new ideas in the arts started to change its orientation towards an abstract modernism, geometric and functional. This new current trend in art was situated at the limit between figurative and non figurative. Huge pieces of glass, circular or polygonal, represented stylized characters, animals, fauna and flora elements treated geometrically. Even lead became an important decorative element.

The occurrence of the non figurative was an important step in the occurrence of the contemporary stained glass, for which the sensibility, the light and the substance are more important than iconography. The architect Frank Lloyd Wright is one of the first architects who used stained glass in the interior architecture.

At the end of the 19th century, and the beginning of the 20th century, which was the most prosperous period of this famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, there wasn’t a distinct style. The figurative and the non figurative style could be often found together. Therefore the choice of the style was something related to the man’s personality and to the personality of the building too. The introduction of non figuration in stained glass took place a long time before the decorative art which represents the frontier between the figurative art and the abstract art through using geometry for decorations. Indeed, the architect Frank Lloyd Wright is one of the first architects who used abstract stained glass structures in his architectural creations.
Since 1898, Frank Lloyd Wright used stained glass with abstract motifs in order to introduce a colored rhythm in his interior architecture. However, the artist from Chicago wanted to enrich his architecture, not necessarily to create separate works of art. But he created a new style and architectural means of expression.
Here are some stained glass features in the perspective of Frank Lloyd Wright. Some pieces of stained glass are meant to hide totally or partially an exterior image which is quite disagreeable. There arte other varieties of stained glass which are based on flowery patterns, suggesting a garden viewed out of the window. Stained glass around an entrance door suggests privacy, and at the same time, a cozy and hospitable interior. Natural light filtered through stained colored glass ceilings suggest a kind of invisible furniture, creating amazing effects. Nowadays a lot of hotels and restaurants choose stained glass instead of simple windows, using the ideas of Wright. Stained glass panels and walls are an elegant and modern solution, as well as the spaces under the stairs, which are usually quite unattractive. Now they can be changed with a little imagination and a little stained glass. Modern architecture will be always grateful to Frank Lloyd Wright.
